HISTORY OF HIGHLAND DRESS
The Breacan Feile ( literally ) the variegated or
chequered covering, is the orignal costume of the Highlanders. In
its simple form it consists of a plain piece
of tartan from four to six yards in length and two yards wide.
This plaid was adjusted and made to fit around the waist in great plaids
or folds and was firmly secured around the loins with a leather belt
in such a manner that the lower side fell
down to
the middle of the knee. The upper part was then fastened with a
large brooch or pin and the remainder of the cloth was then tucked
under
the belt. Using this arrangement the right arm of the wearer is
left uncovered
and allowed full movement. In wet or cold weather the plaid was
thrown loose to cover both shoulders and body. Often the plaid was
fastened
across the chest by a large brooch made of brass or sometime silver
set with semi precious stones.
 
The Feileadh Beag or “small kilt “ was
the fore-runner to the modern kilt of today. Although it can be found
in references
as far
back as 1692 (ref: Chief of Clan Skenes Armorial Bearings )
its wear
was banned
in the Act of 1746 . This Act made it illegal to wear any form
of Highland Dress unless a soldier in the Highland Regiments. |
